So, let’s look at a few good ingredients to add to a hair styling cream and then learn how to make a nourishing hair cream. Ready to get started?

Shea Butter

One of the best ingredients in this recipe, shea butter, sure does justify the first spot when beginning the list. A rich moisturizer, it’s also a rich source of nutrients, including vitamins A and E.

In addition, it’s a good source of essential fatty acids, leaves your hair shiny, tames frizz, curbs damage, protects your hair, and whatnot! It’s suitable for most hair types.

We have covered a lot about coconut oil, but it needs repeating, thanks to its many benefits and nourishing properties. Coconut oil can heal and soothe itchy or dry or flaky scalp, moisturizes and repair dry or damaged hair, curb and prevents split ends, etc.

Did you know it’s the only natural hair care ingredient in certain Asian countries? Yes, it’s sometimes single-handed enough to care for our hair.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is a butter that closely resembles skin’s sebum and is readily absorbed by our skin. For this reason, it’s suitable for all skin types and is a great way to nourish, moisturize and nurture hair and scalp. In addition, it curbs hair loss, strengthens the hair shaft, promotes hair growth, and soothes dry or irritated scalp.

Olive Oil

Extracted from the fruit of the olive tree, this is a great oil for curly hair, especially since the rich moisturizing properties keep frizz and dryness at bay. For those who don’t like, or prefer, or when it doesn’t suit you, Olive oil can come in handy.

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera isn’t part of skin and hair care product scores without reason. It helps repair and heal damaged hair, soothes and moisturizes the dry and flaky scalp, helps with hair growth, and leaves hair shiny.

Vitamin E Oil

It adds to the shelf life of natural products as a natural preservative and is a great addition to hair care products. It can improve hair length, promote growth, strengthen hair, moisturize dry tresses, and more.

Essential Oils

Essential Oils

You can choose any number of essential oils that are good for hair or the essential oils you love. These are just a few hair-beneficial essential oils: Lavender, Peppermint, Myrrh, Rosemary, Clary Sage, Thyme, Frankincense, etc.

  • Shea Butter – 6 Tsps.
  • Coconut Oil – 1/2 Tbsp.
  • Jojoba Oil – 3/4 Tsp.
  • Argan Oil – 3/4 Tsp.
  • Olive Oil – 1/2 Tbsp.
  • Vitamin E Oil – a few drops
  • Aloe Vera Gel – 1/2 Tbsp.
  • Essential Oil(s) – 25 Drops or as needed

  1. In a double boiler, melt together Shea butter and coconut oil.
  2. Once melted, remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Add in all the remaining ingredients – oils, aloe, and the essential oil(s) you’ve chosen.
  4. Stir to combine and refrigerate to set.

How to Use

With this hair cream, a little goes a long way. So, start with a small dollop on one of your palms.

Dab your index finger and warm up the cream – this happens when you rub your fingers together with the cream.

Apply on clean hair and style as usual.

Notes

I like to whisk it well and then refrigerate it to make the cream slightly lighter.

You can use this on dry or damp hair.

You can swap ingredients you’re allergic to with equivalent alternatives.

If coconut oil doesn’t agree with you, swap it for another oil more suited for your hair.

Mango butter and kokum butter are good options to add or use in place of Shea butter.

How to Store

Transfer once done to an airtight mason jar and let it sit in a cool, dry place.

Avoid placing it under direct sunlight or in areas where there’s too much sun exposure.

Is it Safe?

Not only is this recipe safe, but it’s also all-natural and a really good addition to your hair care routine.

How Can I Naturally Add Shine to My Hair?

This hair cream adds shine naturally. Alternatively, you can do this:

Using hair masks is another option you can consider.

Another way is to condition your hair and scalp with a nourishing coconut milk massage. Make sure to let it sit for at least 25 minutes before rinsing it off for shiny and pampered hair. You can do this once a week to strengthen your hair.

You can get a hot oil massage or an apple cider vinegar rinse to add shine to your hair. The massage you can do once in two weeks, though the rinse you can do every time you wash your hair.

If you have a bit of time, try nourishing and conditioning hair packs for shiny hair – eggs, egg yolks, mayonnaise, avocado, bananas, etc., and add nourishment and shine.
