Homemade Hair Serum – DIY Oil Blend Natural Serum for Hair Recipe

With dry hair, extra care and pampering go a long way to prevent breakage and split ends. With a combination of essential oils and carrier oils that are good for hair, this DIY Oil Blend Natural Serum is a winner on your hands.

I found this DIY Oil Blend Natural Serum a real rescue aid for dry or damaged hair. The carrier oils are thick and nourishing and promote healthy and lustrous hair. Ready for the recipe, everyone?

Let’s take a look at the recipe before going further about the ingredients or their benefits.

Ingredients

  • Castor Oil – 2 Tsps.
  • Argan Oil – 1 Tsp.
  • Almond Oil – 9 Tsps.
  • Avocado Oil – 3 Tsps.
  • Lavender Essential Oil – 5 Drops
  • Rosemary Essential Oil – 2 Drops

Instructions

  1. Nothing special, really. Add all the carrier oils to a mixing bowl one after the other.
  2. Add the best essential oils and use a whisk to mix thoroughly.
  3. Strain the oil mixture into an amber glass bottle.
  4. Alternatively, you can add all the oils to a serum dispenser and gently shake to combine. I find the bowl method works better since some oils are very light and some dense. Gently whisking in a bowl helps with blending all the ingredients together uniformly.
  5. Set aside for two days, and you’re good to go!
  6. Done.

How to Use the Hair Serum?

Take a few drops of the hair serum and rub gently with your fingers to warm it up.

Apply on your scalp and hair – mildly on your hair, to the tip of your strands.

Done! Use this as a leave-in hair treatment for the best results.

You can style it as usual.

Note – Less is more for serums, and we have used a combination of nourishing oils that work really well together. Use a few drops, so you don’t weigh down your hair or make it look oily.

**You can apply this right after you air dries your hair after a shower and anytime you need it during the week. However, use mild shampoo for the best results.

Shelf Life

I find the results are really good when preparing small batches every couple of months. However, the shelf life is a good 6 months or more, depending on the shelf life of the oils added to the recipe.

Remember

Many suggest using leave-in conditioners, for thick or thin hair, on damp or wet hair and scalp. However, I prefer letting the hair dry thoroughly before applying.

Some say hair becomes prematurely gray when we apply oil regularly on wet or damp hair. So I prefer to avoid if and buts!

Why Use the Serum?

Dry hair is prone to tangle and split ends and tends to break easily. Keeping your strands moisturized and nourished is the key to avoiding these characteristic dry hair issues.

Also, who doesn’t love lustrous and shiny strands? Hair serums are a sure-shot way to healthy and shiny hair. Besides, using serums keeps your hair manageable and promotes hair growth.

This is not a thick serum and is readily absorbed by the hair follicles. This combination also unclogs your follicles making hair grow faster. Make styling and nurturing your hair easy with this DIY Oil Blend for your hair.

Who can Use this Serum?

Anyone can use it, but this DIY hair serum recipe is particularly crafted with dry and damaged hair in mind. Also, we have used a dense oil (Castor Oil) in this recipe which can weigh down thin hair when used liberally.

Likewise, it can make oily hair more oily and limp (applying any oil liberally, for that matter). So if you’re choosing this recipe that won’t suit your hair and scalp type, feel free to tweak it for your needs.

Why These Ingredients?

Castor Oil

A viscous, nutrient-rich oil has been widely used for centuries to promote hair growth and treat many hair and scalp issues. Castor oil promotes hair growth and is used widely to combat alopecia areata.

It hydrates your hair and strengthens it. It makes hair glossy and forms a protective layer on your hair. The rich fatty acids provide protein for your hair and avert hair follicle inflammation.

It’s rich in Vitamin E, has antimicrobial and antifungal properties, and is widely used to treat scalp infections. There’s another variant of castor oil called black castor oil. It’s where the seeds are ground and then boiled for oil extraction.

The intense heat generated during the boiling process leaves ashes on the ground behind, making the oil black. While black castor oil has a higher pH level, the benefits are otherwise equivalent for the most part.

Argan Oil

Popularly dubbed as the liquid gold of Morocco, argan oil has been used to promote healthier skin and hair for a while. Rich in nutrients, it nurtures and nourishes hair from within and improves hair growth.

It soothes irritated or inflamed scalps triggered by dandruff, eczema, psoriasis, etc. Rich in fatty acids, it repairs hair and reverses hair damage to a certain extent.

It makes hair shinier and more manageable, besides making detangling easier. It also curbs frizz and calms split ends. Last but not least, it protects hair from damage inflicted due to heat.

Sweet Almond Oil

Rich in Vitamin E, it promotes better hair health and growth. Also, it’s a light and neutral oil so it can be used by anyone. Those with thinning hair will like this oil’s consistency and results.

It’s rich in Vitamin A, Zinc, Omega Fatty Acids, and antioxidants. It helps protect from UV rays inflicted damage, free radical damage, and promotes better circulation to the scalp health. It also curbs itching of the scalp and reduces inflammation.

Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is rich in nutrients, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants. It promotes hair growth, curbs dandruff, prevents and combats frizz, repairs and protects hair from damage, etc.

Avocado oil is particularly good because it almost mimics silicone and makes detangling easy. It is lightweight and neutral and hence, can be used by anyone. It doesn’t clog your pores and also makes hair manageable.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary essential oil offers numerous benefits for your hair though it’s sought after in hair care for promoting hair growth. It prevents and combats premature graying, curbs dandruff, and soothes the dry, itchy, and inflamed scalp.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil is antimicrobial, promotes hair growth, prevents thinning of hair, and can be applied directly without dilution. It is good for healing wounds and bruises and prevents bacterial or fungal infestation.

It’s more of an all-rounder, but lavender oil sure does smell great and is a good stress buster. What’s not to like about it?

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

DIY is fun when you add your own twist to the recipes, isn’t it? Do let us know the tweaks you loved.

You can swap the essential oils for other hair-beneficial essential oils that help dry hair, like Thyme Essential Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, Sandalwood Essential Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Clary Sage Essential Oil, etc. You can also use any essential oil you like for its aroma.

You can also add Olive Oil to restore damaged hair.

You can add Jojoba Oil for shiny and silky strands.

You can add Apricot Oil to curb frizz.

Black Castor Oil is a good substitute in place of Castor Oil.

You can also use coconut oil, depending on your hair type. It moisturizes your hair and works as a sealant to protect it.

You can add Grapeseed Oil, Onion Oil, or Black Seed Oil to promote hair growth.

Last but not least, choose alternatives that you like or have tried for your hair or are suited best for your hair and scalp type. The results are better, and it’s more effective that way.

Though natural, with the wrong ingredients, you could hit a roadblock or have issues, so make sure you check on the ingredients and their properties before you start using them in your hair care products.

It’s not all; you can do more with this versatile recipe. Just remember to check on the shelf life, as some oils have a very short shelf life.

However, if you don’t have time, you could also try a homemade hair serum that suits your hair type and take it from there. Not everyone needs a serum, but for promoting hair growth after liberal hair fall, curbing hair thinning, to repair or soothing dry, damaged, and frizzed hair, quality hair serum works good.

If it has keratin, it is more effective, especially when combatting hair thinning or other hair and scalp issues. As always, feel free to write back to us with any questions, queries, or requests.
