DIY Leave In Conditioner Recipes

Homemade Leave in Spray Conditioner – DIY Leave in Conditioner for Brittle Hair

Maintaining curly hair is a task by itself, but the effort is well worth it when they bounce with it. Isn’t it? However, breakage is a widespread problem with curly hair, and we’re going to stop it with this easy and natural spray.

When it comes to curly hair, a few special considerations should be taken into account while preparing hair products for curly hair. The only way to prevent the breakage of curly hair is to keep it moisturized and nourished.

Experts suggest using water-based leave-in conditioners that also have oil and cream. They call it the LOC method – Liquid, Oil, and Cream – expansion for the acronym LOC. They say water is the best way to hydrate hair and keep it moisturized for days together. Water helps lock in moisture and is combined with oil and cream. The best leave-in conditioner keeps adding moisture and nourishes your curls.

The best leave-in conditioner would take a while and a few trials and errors (hope not!) before you identify the best leave-in conditioners for your thick or thin brittle hair. But the journey, as scary as it sounds, would be worth your while, irrespective of whether or not you’re trying for DIY or a store-bought deep conditioner.

This straightforward recipe with easy-to-find ingredients takes only a few minutes of your time. First, look at the recipe for the leave-in conditioners and then move on to the whys.

Shelf Life

Prepare smaller batches every few days for best results. This lasts for a few weeks when refrigerated, and you can have the best leave-in conditioner.

Who Can Use the Leave-in Conditioners?

This leave-in conditioner is intended for dry, damaged, and brittle hair. It is suitable for all hair types, especially curly, dry hair, kinky or wavy. They should be able to spray liberally due to the nature of their hair.

It is suitable for thick and coarse hair, too. For other hair types, spray as needed – for example, thin or oily hair might not need liberal spraying.

While this mixture suits all hair types that need nurturing, moisturizing, and nourishment, the quantity might vary based on your hair type.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

You can use any essential oil you prefer for aroma if you want to add more invigorating aromas or for your favorite fragrance.

You can use hair-beneficial essential oils instead of clary sage and lavender essential oils. I have chosen ideal crucial oils for dry, damaged, brittle, or damp hair. However, there are other options, too, like ylang-ylang essential oil, geranium essential oil, rosemary essential oil, thyme essential oil, etc.

You can add a few drops of Argan oil to this recipe for smooth, silky, and manageable locks.

If you’re allergic to any ingredients, swap them for suitable alternatives.

You can skip Avocado oil or swap it for coconut oil. However, many find coconut oil counterproductive for some fine hair types.

You can also use Jojoba oil in this recipe instead of the oils. It’s a great hair moisturizer and suitable for dry, damaged, damp hair, curly, and color-treated hair.

You can increase the ratio of aloe vera juice or even substitute it in place of water (aloe juice has a lot of water, too) – depending on your requirement, preference, and body type. For example, many don’t prefer the herbal smell of aloe and like to keep it less.

You can use any natural honey, including wild honey, raw honey, burst honey, multi-floral honey, tupelo honey, manuka honey, mountain honey, etc. Some types of honey are local to certain countries or areas, but some are available globally.

You can use any natural and unprocessed raw honey for the best results. There is a reason why honey is a staple ingredient in curly hair products for black women.

Why These Ingredients?

Aloe Vera Juice

Aloe vera offers many benefits for hair, skin, and scalp. It is rich in minerals and active ingredients that can strengthen your hair. It also has essential fatty acids, vitamins A, B12, C & D, and amino acids and promotes healthier hair follicles. In addition, it controls the scalp’s sebum levels, curbs itching and inflammation of the scalp, protects hair from UV damage and boosts fine hair growth.

It is also an excellent hydration aid and leaves your hair soft and shiny. These are just a few benefits of this wonderful herb, and it’s also consumed for its myriad benefits, more so for women.

Coconut Water

Yes, you can use coconut water on your hair and leave it without rinsing without any issues. Now that’s cleared up, let’s understand what’s unique about coconut water. When you break open a coconut, there’s clear water within – this is called coconut water. It is a rich source of electrolytes, minerals, vitamins, and natural sugar.

For this purpose, it’s often used when a person is tired, weak, or exhausted in countries where coconut grows abundantly. Coconut water is antimicrobial and offsets aging-related signs. It is hydrating and makes hair softer, shinier, and silkier. It also promotes hair growth and nourishes your hair.

Last but not least, it curbs dandruff and repairs and rejuvenates hair. It also adds volume to your hair and keeps your locks and scalp happy. These are just a few reasons coconut oil should be part of your hair and skincare routine.

Forest Honey

As mentioned earlier, there are different types of natural and raw honey. By natural, we mean it’s available without farming in their habitat. Nowadays, bees are cultivated, and love is harvested. Some harvested honey contains chemical residue, and they are often fed unnatural food.

The resulting pet is not suitable for health or offers many benefits. On the other hand, natural honey provides various skin, health, and hair benefits. Honey is a humectant and can pull in moisture – your hair and scalp are moisturized – and you get soft, shiny, and healthy hair. Besides, moisturization also curbs breakage. It promotes hair growth. It is a hair leave-in conditioner, softener, and detangler.

This also means your hair will be manageable. Like chemical bleaching agents, honey is a lightening agent that can enhance your natural highlights without damaging your skin or hair. An anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, honey combats scalp issues, including dandruff.

Clary Sage Essential Oil

Rich in antioxidants, clary sage can make your hair healthier and more robust. It is an antimicrobial oil and combats scalp issues like dandruff. It promotes hair growth and is often used in hair treatment products along with rosemary and other herbal extracts.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender essential oil promotes hair growth, and antimicrobial properties in lavender combat scalp issues like dandruff. It soothes damaged and wavy hair and moisturizes brittle and dry strands. It is calming and smells good. It is one of the few essential oils that can be applied to the skin directly.

This is one of my favorite and go-to vital oils in the lovely aroma and numerous benefits it has to offer. That it accelerates healing and calms us done is a bonus!

Coconut Oil

If your hair is dry, coconut oil is a real boon and lifesaver for your hair. It conditions dry hair and moisturizes it. It promotes hair growth and curbs hair thinning. It will tame frizz and make your hair shiny and lustrous. Best of all, it nourishes, rejuvenates, and repairs damaged hair.

Avocado Oil

Rich in essential fatty acids, it boosts hair growth. Rich in nutrients, including Vitamin E and antioxidants, it strengthens hair. The anti-inflammatory properties combat scalp issues and rejuvenate hair. It is a great hair moisturizer and nurtures hair. It soothes brittle hair and prevents the breakage of hair. It repairs damaged hair, conditions hair, and makes detangling hair easier. It makes your hair soft and shiny and combats frizz.
