Homemade Serum for Coarse Hair – DIY Hair Serum for Thick Hair

Thick hair comes with its own set of challenges. Make your hair manageable, soft and shiny with this hair serum for coarse and thick hair at home

Oil-based hair serum can help tame flyaways, soothe frizz, helps with detangling, nourishes and nurtures your hair. There are many different ways to do a hair serum for thick hair but this one is really simple. Let’s take a look at the recipe and then move on to other topics.

Ingredients

  • Jojoba Oil – 1 Tbsp.
  • Argan Oil – 1 Tbsp.
  • Avocado Oil – 1 Tbsp.
  • Castor Oil – 1 Tsp.
  • Lavender Essential Oil – 25 drops

Instructions

Nothing special; add all the ingredients in a glass amber bottle.

Shake gently and let it sit for two days before use.

Done! Your homemade hair serum for coarse hair is ready and can also be used as a leave-in hair treatment.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

You can also add a teaspoon of pomegranate seed oil to this recipe. It is a very nourishing and nurturing oil that’s especially good for dry or damaged hair.

You can swap avocado oil with sweet almond oil, or add it along with these ingredients. If you’re allergic to Avocado don’t use Avocado oil in your recipe. Rich in Vitamin E, and antioxidants and used for centuries in hair care, sweet almond oil is a great addition to this recipe.

You can use coconut oil if your hair is prone to dryness and dehydration, as it can retain moisture like nobody’s business. For some, coconut oil seems to worsen dryness, especially for those with coarse and thick hair. So, do a patch test and see if it works for you.

You can add any essential oil of your choice. Rosemary and Peppermint essential oils are often used to combat frizz, and dryness and to boost hair growth. There are other hair-beneficial essential oils that you can try, too.

How to Use the Serum?

After air drying your hair, take a few drops of the serum and use your fingertips to warm up and apply the oil from the middle till the strand tips.

If you apply on damp hair, start from mid-way and continue till your tips are coated. Many suggest applying it slightly damp for better moisturization and hydration.

As I always say, a little goes a long way – so take a few drops each and go from there. Lightly coating your strands is more than enough. Unless you scalp is dry, you don’t have to apply this on your scalp.

**As a note of caution – castor oil is quite thick and can’t be used alone, especially in your hair or scalp. Also, using too much can be counterproductive. Combine it with other carrier oils and use it on your hair and scalp – you can use it on your scalp unless you have any concerns regarding the same.

Who Can Use the Serum?

The ingredients for this serum are chosen for thick, coarse or dry and dehydrated hair types. However, anyone can use it if they’re not allergic to the ingredients.

Do a patch test before applying the serum all over and most importantly, if the ingredients are not suitable, swap for suitable alternatives.

This is a conditioner and nourishing leave-in hair treatment.

Frequency

You can apply this after a hair shower. though you can apply between showers whenever needed.

Individually most of the ingredients can be used a few times a week, or as needed. So feel free to apply this between showers, or when you feel your hair or scalp is dry.

Shelf Life

Made of oils and waxes this coarse or dry hair serum will last well for months – check the expiry date for the oils you add and calculate accordingly. The one with the lease shelf life will be your scale.

I like to prepare smaller batches with different ingredients and switch up the recipe every now and then.

However, preparing smaller batches every 3 – 4 months is better if you have the time for it. The ingredients are fresh and you can always play around with the aroma and ingredients and see what works for you best. Once you figure out the best combination for you, prepare a large batch and use it as needed.
