A DIY Hair Growth spray is just what you need when you’re combatting hair loss, thinning hair and stunted hair growth and want to increase your hair growth rate, or even for anyone looking to make their hair follicles and scalp healthy.

Understanding Hair Growth

Our hair is more than an embellishment, though it greatly reflects our personality. It’s our crowning glory, and we love flaunting our locks in style. Especially those with a good social life agree that stunted hair growth affects their confidence if their hair is not top-notch. So, without much ado, let’s understand more about hair and hair growth.

Not just our heads; there is hair growth in other places, too. Not just brows and lashes, we also have body hair. Hair consists of the strand and the root, with nerve ends and follicles being a part of the root. New cells are generated in the hair bulb, a portion of the hair root, which then stick together and harden before they form the hair strand.

Hair Growth Cycle

The hair growth cycle consists of three phases – Growth or anagen phase. About 90% of our hair is in this phase 90% of the time. Depending on one’s health, the hair growth stage can last longer or become shorter.

At the end of the growth phase, it’s the transition or catagen phase, where hair strands are cut off from the root. This lasts for 2 – 4 weeks, and then hair moves to the third phase – the resting phase.

The resting or telogen phase is where the blood supply is completely cut off, and the hair is pushed out. The new cells are formed to fill the now-empty cuticle, and the cycle starts all over again.

DIY Hair Growth Spray Recipe

Now that you know how hair growth works, expanding the growth phase is key. This hair spray does just that and helps promote hair growth. This is an all-natural and easy recipe that would also improve the overall health of your hair and scalp. So, let’s get started.

Ingredients

  • Witch Hazel = 1 Oz
  • Distilled Water – As needed
  • Argan Oil – ½ Tsp.
  • Rosemary Essential Oil – 7 Drops
  • Cedarwood Essential Oil – 7 Drops
  • Peppermint Essential Oil – 5 Drops
  • Myrrh Essential Oil – 5 Drops
  • Carrot Seed Oil – ½ Tsp.

Instructions

1. In a spray bottle, add the witch hazel, argan oil and carrot seed oil, followed by the essential oils.

2. Shake gently to combine and add water – usually, it’s the same quantity of witch hazel or more if you prefer a more diluted spray.

3. Shake well after adding water.

4. Your hair spray is ready.

5. It’s ideal to wait for a day at least for the essential oils to combine with the other ingredients well.

Done!

Application of Hair Growth Spray

Spray the DIY hair growth spray liberally on your roots – it’s light and doesn’t turn your hair greasy or weigh you down your hair.

Massage gently and work your way all through the scalp.

Dab the remaining diy hair growth spray on your hair strands.

This spray is for your roots – best applied when your hair is wet or damp after a shower.

After massaging, you can apply anything on your hands to your hair. Otherwise, you don’t need to apply it to your hair unless it’s dry or frizzy.

You can apply the DIY hair growth spray to dry hair if you’re more comfortable applying it after your hair dries. But applying right after showering and air drying your hair helps more than applying it later. This is because your hair and scalp are more receptive to the nutrients, and the pores are open, unlike when you’ve already crossed a day or two and accumulation has started.

You can use the DIY hair growth spray twice or thrice a week. It’s suitable for men and women, even children. We recommend diluting it a bit more for children to suit their sensitive skin.

Massage and Scalp Stimulation

Massaging the diy hair growth spray has two benefits – penetration of the hair spray and absorption of nutrients by hair roots and scalp stimulation.

Massaging stimulates your scalp and promotes better blood flow to the scalp. This helps carry nutrients to your hair follicles and encourages better hair growth.

Massaging also unclogs your pores and removes dead skin cells, clearing your scalp and getting nutrients to your hair roots to nourish your hair and encourage hair growth.

Ingredients Used & Their Potential Benefits for Hair Growth

Witch Hazel is known to regulate sebum levels, but it can also promote better scalp circulation. This prevents hair loss, a major cause of a reduction in hair growth. It also helps carry the nutrients to your hair roots, and that results in healthier hair strands.

Argan Oil is nourishing and a very good anti-inflammatory. The rich antioxidant content strengthens hair, while the nutrients promote healthier and thicker hair growth.

Rosemary Essential Oil has been used to enhance hair growth for centuries. It also prevents premature greying and combats dandruff.

Cedarwood Essential Oil not only promotes hair growth, it also encourages hair regrowth. It prevents hair loss and, combined with Rosemary and other essential oils, can do wonders for hair growth.

Peppermint Essential Oil promotes hair growth during the hair growth phase. It improves blood flow to the scalp, which in turn stimulates hair growth.

Myrrh Essential Oil opens hair follicles and enhances hair growth. It moisturizes dry and damaged hair and keeps your hair and scalp healthy.

Carrot Seed Oil offers numerous benefits for your hair and scalp. It curbs hair loss, stimulates hair growth, combats dryness and dandruff and gets rid of split ends.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

Witch hazel is our base, so we don’t have to use alcohol to combine oils and water. However, you can also use aloe vera with similar results.

You can choose any hair-beneficial essential oils in place of the essential oils listed here or add your preferred essential oil for aroma. The key to choosing the ingredients listed here is they support hair growth. There are many other hair-beneficial oils you could choose from – Lavender Essential Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, Thyme Essential Oil, Basil Essential Oil, etc.

You can also use grapeseed oil or pomegranate seed oil instead or along with carrot seed oil.

You can use Jojoba oil instead of Argan oil in this recipe.

How Does Hair Growth Spray Help With Hair Growth

Though light and prepared in a jiffy without any cumbersome process, this hair spray is loaded with nutrients and ingredients that help stimulate hair growth. Not just that, it also keeps the scalp healthy, which in turn improves hair health.

Healthy hair and scalp will improve hair growth rate, which in turn means more hair growth. Also, by keeping scalp issues at bay, trigger factors for hair loss are eliminated, and that helps with our hair growth.

Safety Precautions

Anyone can use the spray, and if you’re worried, please do a patch test. Those with dry hair can do a patch test and increase the oil ratio and reduce the witch hazel ratio if needed – it’s an astringent and helps regulate the scalp’s sebum levels.

Don’t forget to do a patch test to make sure you’re not allergic to the ingredients.

How to Incorporate the Hair Growth Spray into your Hair Care Routine

Applying it right after showering or air drying your hair is ideal for getting the hair spray to penetrate the hair roots and stimulate hair growth.

You can reapply as needed during the week.

Applying it thrice or at least twice a week is important for promoting a healthier scalp and stimulating hair growth.

Right after a shower gives the best results, but you can also apply as and when you feel the need to reapply during the week.

Tips for Enhancing Hair Growth

Give your hair the TLC it needs. Brush it gently, don’t push and pull and brush your hair gently.

Detangle your hair gently to avoid hair breakage. Detangle using your fingers and use a detangler if you need it.

Trim your hair regularly to get rid of split ends. We all know they can’t be cured, but you can prevent them from furthering up the shaft with a trim.

Avoid over-brushing, over-washing or anything over the top. Stick to a consistent routine that’s suitable for your hair.

The nutrients you need go to the vital organs first, and hair won’t come under it. So, unless you’re getting enough and more, there won’t be any left to allocate to your hair. So make sure to eat nutritious food adequately.

They say brushing 100 times can enhance growth, but it’s not about the count but stimulating your scalp. But don’t go overboard; brush a few times to stimulate but wait till you reach 100. Overbrushing is counterproductive and causes other issues.

Reduce or avoid styling products and treatments.

Say no to heat or chemical treatments to prevent and soothe damaged hair.

Have a regular hair care routine that includes oil to moisturize and nourish your hair.
