Is your hair a tangled mess? Are you finding it hard to detangle without creaking or pulling out chunks of hair? Have you ever considered a DIY hair detangler?
A homemade hair detangler is an easy and affordable solution for tangled hair. Not only does it make detangling easier, but you can also avoid hair breakage and pulling out your hair either in frustration or by handling it roughly during detangling.
So, let’s get started and learn a few simple DIY hair detangler recipes you can try out at home with readily available or easily acquirable ingredients.
There are different hair detanglers, and each might have multiple ingredients. But what’s common is that they all work similarly.
Detanglers are a type of hair conditioner that alters your hair’s surface by depositing polymers or oils on your hair and/or creating an acidic reaction to tighten the hair surface, smooth out the rough edges, and add a positive charge to prevent static electricity. These make your hair pliable and easy to detangle without much ado.
So yes, they work and can be natural or chemical-based. Most store-bought ones have loads of chemicals, preservatives, and whatnot. By switching to DIY hair detangling spray, you take charge of your hair care and styling.
There are many different options when you want to prepare a homemade hair detangler. However, we have listed a few recipes that are effective, natural, easy, and mostly prepared using ingredients we have handy.
Let’s take a look at those natural and easy DIY hair detangler recipes.
The mucilage content in flaxseeds makes it an ideal ingredient for our homemade hair detangler. This is one of the easiest and probably readily available ingredients-based recipes.
Add the flaxseeds and simmer it until the consistency turns slimy – it takes a few minutes for it to become slimy.
Alternatively, you can soak it overnight to reduce the boiling time.
Switch off the heat once the mixture turns nice and slimy, which is about 20 minutes.
Let it cool slightly, then filter using a cheesecloth.
Now, stir in the apple cider vinegar and lemon essential oil and whisk briskly to combine.
Refrigerate overnight to set.
Transfer the contents to a spray bottle, add another half cup of water, and shake well.
Check the consistency – it should be usable in a spray bottle, so if that’s not the case, dilute by adding more water.
Done!
Spritz on your hair – wet or dry hair – and comb through to spread evenly.
I like it in a gel consistency, though you can see what works best for you.
The Apple cider vinegar’s aroma disappears after a few minutes, so don’t worry. However, you can skip it if uncomfortable without affecting the recipe much.
You can choose any essential oil that works best for you – lemon essential oil – oily hair and scalp or for an energizing aroma; lavender essential oil – dry hair or scalp or for a relaxing and soothing aroma; rosemary essential oil – everyone and all hair types.
Flaxseeds can be tricky to filter out. However, the key is to take it when slightly runnier than on the thicker side. It will continue to thicken while cooling and during refrigeration.
Filter flax seeds using cheesecloth or pantyhose! Yes, pantyhose works well, so use any old pantyhose if you have one lying around.
You can also use chia seeds with similar results, though flax seeds might be easier to filter out comparatively!
Also, you can store the flax seeds and use them at least once more, sometimes twice, before discarding them. However, the second batch might be runnier, so I usually add some flax seeds. I have tried twice with good results, but it doesn’t offer a good hold.
If it turns runnier than you like, simmer it for a few minutes. Add water and shake the spray bottle to combine well if it thickens.
This lasts for two weeks or more when refrigerated.
This is a straightforward recipe using natural ingredients. This detangler spray is also hydrating and moisturizing.
Nothing too hard – Just add all the ingredients to a spray bottle and shake to combine!
Shake before every use.
Spritz on your hair and comb through.
Adding aloe vera gel to this takes this recipe up a notch. But if you don’t like aloe vera, you can skip it and add a spoon of carrier oil of your choice and essential oils.
When you use store-bought aloe vera, it mixes well easily. If you’re using fresh gel, make sure to run it in your mixer.
You can use any essential oils for this detangling spray.
You should be able to store this for a couple of weeks in the refrigerator.
Marshmallow root not only helps with detangling, but it also combats frizz. It is also easier to prepare and doesn’t need much preparation.
In my experience, marshmallow root wins hands down for detangling. But you try out and figure out what works best for you.
Simmer it for about 25 minutes or so.
After it cools down, filter the solution into a spray bottle.
Add the essential oils, aloe vera gel, and Jojoba oil and shake to combine.
Done!
Spritz on your hair – wet or dry hair – and comb through.
You can use any essential oil of your choice.
I have used store-bought aloe vera here, though you can use homemade gel too. Ensure you run it in your mixer to get a smooth paste that will dissolve easily.
You can use any carrier oil that makes detangling easy and moisturizes your locks – argan oil, coconut oil, olive oil, etc.
This lasts for two weeks or more when refrigerated.
You can include essential oils of your choice for added benefits and, of course, aroma. You can use one or more than one, according to your requirement or preference. However, choose them based on their properties for best results.
Choose lemon or other citrus essential oils for regulating sebum levels.
Rosemary or thyme essential oils promote better hair growth.
Lavender or chamomile essential oils when you have dry hair or scalp.
Lavender, rosemary, and a few other essential oils are suitable for all hair and scalp types.
Wintergreen, tea tree, or eucalyptus oils to combat dandruff, and so on.
Always run your fingers gently through your hair after showering while still damp to get rid of tangles – do NOT use combs or brush when your hair is wet.
Always try detangling with your fingers first – this way, you can reduce breakage by dealing with your hair gently.
Use a detangling comb to detangle hair gently.
Choose the right detangling comb for best results – these days, and you get different combs to suit different hair types.
Detangling from your tips works better – so move up inch by inch while detangling.
Prevention is the best cure, they say! To avoid tangles, brush before you sleep and braid your hair to prevent tangles.
